It Starts With Begin

When Teva decided to pursue a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), it wasn’t just about changing careers. Having a brother with an acquired disability, he wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges his brother faced and use that knowledge to help others in similar situations. This course became the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Transitioning into the support world was a major shift from his previous background in cheffing and hospitality, but the leap was entirely worth it in Teva’s eyes. Though it was a bit of a challenge, he managed to balance his work/life/study experience with Burleigh campus’s connected learning delivery, encouragement from trainer Anne and classmates, along with the help of his own personal support networks.

The big bonus? “The best part was being offered a job in the industry and being able to work and study at the same time. That really helped me understand the content better. I thoroughly learnt a lot and had fun at ACE Colleges.”

For anyone hesitant about studying as an adult learner and facing a big career change, Teva’s advice is: “There’s no shame in being new at something. As a person of multiple interests, I have lots of experience with being a beginner. But the ultimate thing that has helped me is to just continue to showing up and before you know it you’re not a beginner anymore.”
